Interview with head coach Mladen Vukasinovic

    January 26, 2026 | Storytime | ~6min read time

Our players commit to two training sessions and one match per week. How does the organisation look like behind the curtains? How do we ensure the safety, physical stamina and technical and mental readiness of our team? Hear it from our certified head coach Mladen Vukasinovic, interviewed by Luka Vethake.

Can you tell us about your passion for volleyball? When did it start and why has it remained such an important part of your life?

My volleyball journey began more than 30 years ago in Belgrade, where I started playing with friends from school. My first club was called Block Out, which is an interesting coincidence given that I later became a blocker and eventually joined No Blockers.

Early on, we achieved notable success, including winning a tournament that featured many of the strongest clubs in Serbia. That led to an invitation to train with Partizan, one of the most prestigious clubs in the country. Partizan played a significant role in shaping me both as a player and as a person. We competed at a high, professional level, but equally important were the friendships, travel, and shared growth. There is expression in Serbia: “Other clubs have supporters, Partizan is loved!”

When I started university, I initially feared that my volleyball career might end. While I continued playing in second-league clubs, my university years turned out to be the most rewarding period. I played for the university team and competed internationally, traveling to cities such as Beirut, Valencia, Paris, Istanbul, and Milan, and we achieved strong results together.

After moving to Antwerp four years ago, volleyball was something I truly missed—it is part of who I am. That search led me to No Blockers, where informal sessions evolved into a growing, structured club that continues to develop today.

What motivated you to pursue the coach certification and how does the process look like?

My primary motivation was to pass on the passion I have for volleyball. I have two children, and I strongly believe in sharing not only the sport itself but also the values behind it—teamwork, respect, and personal development.

Volleyball in Belgium is very well organized, with leagues for all ages, from youth to veterans, and I wanted to be part of that ecosystem. I was also volleyball referee at national level in Serbia, but I ultimately chose to focus on playing and coaching.

The certification process combined theory with strong practical elements. One aspect I particularly appreciated was the “learning by doing” approach. We were given real case studies—such as designing a warm-up—and worked in groups to deliver sessions, with other course participants acting as players. Each session was followed by structured feedback and discussions on improvement, new techniques, and modern training tools.

It was a very supportive and collaborative experience, and I look forward to continuing my education as a coach.

What is the training philosophy of No Blockers and how do you bring it to life on the court?

Our training philosophy is built around three core pillars.

The first is trust—building confidence, mutual respect, and strong bonds within the team. The second is experience. We aim to give every player meaningful playing time, regardless of background or level. This includes rotating systems extensively, using full rosters, and allowing players to experience different roles and match situations.

Training is much more than physical or technical development. It is also where players get to know each other better, experiment with new ideas, and contribute beyond the court. For example, one of our players developed an internal statistics application, and others contribute through their professional expertise and experience.

The third pillar is continuous improvement. As one of our players once said, “Volleyball is a game of fixing each other’s mistakes.” No one is perfect, and constructive correction—of reception, setting, or positioning—is essential to collective progress.

Our biggest challenge at this moment is managing a very diverse roster. We have players with professional-level experience alongside others who have only recently started playing. Balancing training intensity and engagement for all levels requires thoughtful planning, individual attention, and additional friendly matches to support player development.

What can we expect from No Blockers in the coming years?

In the short term, our goal this season is clear: to win the league and the cup. We are currently leading the championship and remain focused on maintaining momentum while continuing to develop all players.

Mid-term, within the next two years, we plan to launch a women’s section competing officially. We also aim to establish a youth section and further grow our club structure. Additionally, we are exploring the creation of a beach volleyball section, as we believe Antwerp’s international community would strongly benefit from such an initiative.

We already participate in tournaments across the Benelux region and plan to expand internationally, including competitions in countries such as Germany, France, and Serbia.

Looking five years ahead, we are ambitious. Our long-term vision includes competing at European level and contributing players to national teams. We also aim to expand the No Blockers concept beyond Belgium through international partnerships.

We believe in dreaming big, growing together, and building something meaningful— both on and off the court.

  • No Blockers is now a vzw

No Blockers is now a vzw

    January 20, 2026 | Club news | ~2min read time

We are happy to announce that No Blockers is now finally and officially a registered vzw (vereniging zonder winstoogmerk) in Belgium!

    Why does this matter?

Becoming a vzw is more than a change in letters. As a feitelijke vereniging (fv), we were regarded a group of people coming together for a shared goal or purpose under the eyes of the law. However, we always felt that No Blockers is destined for more. Becoming a vzw means commitment, institutionalisation and development to us.

Commitment because we commit to the values and principles of our club enshrined in our constitution, democratic governance and code of conduct. This step also signals to our opponents, competition leagues and sport federations that we have our feet on the ground and are here to stay and grow.

Institutionalisation is a chunky word, but we hope that our members and the general public will come to see No Blockers not only as a club with a purpose, but also as an institutional authority in Antwerp with a strong commitment to bring together volleyball players from all skill levels, roles and backgrounds.

Lastly, this officialisation will enable us to sell our own merch, contracting sponsors and carry out a variety of other financial activities. The board will reconvene soon to review No Blockers’ future path and growth strategies.

    The process

We considered becoming a vzw in early 2025, but there was simply too much on our plate and we had to focus on very real organisational questions of logos and teamwear. The project however never came to a complete standstill. Luka co-authored the constitution (onderhandse akte) in the months to follow and took over the process of changing our judicial form. With the new year’s energy we decided to make a push and, after a lot of proofreading, hand in our request which was promptly accepted.

    What is next?

We’re still the same old club with the same outstanding people and principles. No Blockers will accept sponsors for the 2026/27 season soon and hold its first general assembly in August. We are currently also working on getting recognised as an official sports club (erkende sportclub) in Antwerp. Bear with us, watch our livestreams or support us live at matches and never forget: No fears. No limits. No Blockers.

  • Building our women’s team

    Building our women’s team

    November 20, 2025 | Club news | ~2min read time

The 2026/27 season seems far away, but it most certainly is not from a club management perspective. We have big goals for next year and are already starting to get things moving in the background. One of these activities is to build a No Blockers women’s team.

    Beginnings in motion

On November 9th No Blockers, No Blockers-affiliated and Team Beshie women players came together for a trial match in Sporthal De Rode Loop in Merksem. The goal was to get better grip on where we stand with a potential women’s team. The atmosphere was great, with a lot of interest from the rest of the club members manifesting itself in attendance. There were no losers that day, only one big winner: No Blockers club. If we combine the strengths of all of the players present that day, we will have an exceptionally strong women’s team.

    Our vision

Team Beshie’s players will merge with the No Blockers women’s team fully and officially by early 2026. We will issue a press release once the process has been completed. Our hopes are that one team will start competing in the 3rd provincial league of Antwerp. If we’re lucky, we will have a first and second women’s team. One starting in 3rd Provincial and the other starting in Sporta V. We also want to continuously grow our women’s teams.

    Training philosophy

As for the trainings, both teams (or one) will be under the leadership of Begüm and Sacha as captain and coach, respectively. The idea is to hold mixed trainings as well as focused separate ones. The philosophy behind this is that we want to act as one club and exchange and community are central to our DNA. So mingling and enjoying the sport together is important to us. However, we also realise that certain aspects of the game are best practised separately. The attack through the middle being the most prevalent one, for example.

    What the future holds

We are looking forward for the next months to come. Our women’s team is already an organised group and their friendly matches see high attendance and interest from our club members. Each player knows their position well, so now it is all about developing that special team spirit and synergy so that they can beat their opponents within the blink of an eye.

  • How we as a small volleyball club use match data

How we as a small volleyball club use match data

    November 11, 2025 | Storytime | ~5min read time

Everybody was impressed by the accuracy and visualisation of match data during the FIVB World Championships this year. So how do we collect data, how do we use it and what does it mean for the team?

    Making data accessible

Data has become a staple in professional volleyball. We are used to impressive animations of ball in/ball out, reception accuracy visualisations and seeing what positions the setter trusts in the most to make a kill. As a club in Sporta IV our means are limited, but not our willpower and imagination. Of course we do not possess wearable sensors, high-frame cameras and powerful statistical software, but we got our very own data-wiz; Fabio.

He took it into his own hands to find a pragmatic solution to collect, process and visualise data about our matches. Fabio used open-source app framework Stream Lit and an AI tool to build our No Blockers dashboard infrastructure. The process involves the creation of Excel files designed to capture specific data from the games. This custom information is manually collected and then uploaded to generate the match data.

How we collect data about our players and our team

The system was designed to capture custom information about games, specifically details per player, such as attacks, kills, misses, sets, serve receptions, digs, and blocks. This level of detail allows for a comprehensive analysis of individual player performance.

Team performance is also a key aspect of the system, with data collected on points won when serving and receiving, as well as the length of rallies to determine if the team performs better with quick or longer points. The length of rallies is categorised into the number of hits, such as three, four, or five hits, providing insight into the team’s strategy and effectiveness.

    Rendering insights in a dashboard

A backend code is used to clean the data and match it to the right formats for calculations, enabling the creation of graphs, numbers, and charts for each Key Performance Indicator (KPI). For every KPI, there is a calculation using the collected data, ensuring that the insights gained are accurate and reliable.

The dashboard is designed to be user-friendly, where all that is required is to upload the Excel file containing the manually captured game data. Once uploaded, the data is automatically populated, providing instant access to the analysed information.

Future development and use of the software

The system is currently in its first version, with plans to expand and improve KPIs and tracking methods as it evolves. We are also evaluating more granular and nuanced ways of collecting data. For example, when it comes to attack kills, there are several types of kills we could take into account: side out, attack in the net, attack blocked, easy attack, strong attack but defended and so on. We are also looking at possible speech recognition options for easier data collection. The ultimate goal is to gain deeper insights into the game, identifying areas where the team needs to focus its training. The system automatically suggests coach insights and recommendations based on the statistics it analyses, making it a valuable tool for strategic decision-making.

  • League and cup update

    League and cup update

    November 6, 2025 | Club news | ~3min read time

The first couple of matches are behind us. So far, we have won every league match and every cup match. A good moment to look back – and ahead.

    League matches

Our first few matches were fun, challenging and experimental. Against some teams, we had the opportunity to try out new rotations, plays and ideas. We were very happy that we won against Geel-Zwaart Wijnegem because they were competing against us for the first place in Sporta IV. Now, only one team is standing in our way and that is Vosco 1. We will play against them on November 21st, so be sure not to miss this match and come to support us!

For now, we couldn't be happier about our start into competitive volleyball. Everything has been running more or less smoothly and we even started organising friendly matches against teams based in Antwerp. We find those matches to yield the largest learning leap, specifically against organised teams such as Polonia or Sveka Schoten. What's more, after this season, we will assess opportunities to multiply our teams and scope out different league possibilities as well. We are looking forward to this new development step of the club and share all about it in due time.

    Cup matches

No Blockers has also had its first appearance in the Sporta lower cup (HL). This cup is held between Sporta IIIA, IIIB and IV. In the round of 16, we had a team from Osta Berchem visiting us and scored a quick 3:0 home win against them. This was a surprise for both teams, but we are nonetheless happy to advance to the next round where we will meet Sveka Schoten 2 in the quarter finals. Our goal for the cup is simple: we want to win it.

    Match announcement

It wouldn’t be us if we didn’t have a match to announce. We hope to see as many of you as possible this Friday for our 7th match against Don Bosco Hoboken VC.

    Opponent: Don Bosco Hoboken VC
    Date: November 7th, 2025
    Time: 20.00h
    Address: Santiagostraat 2, 2000 Antwerpen

    Match goals

Our goal is to attack our serves and experiment with different rotations. We also want to force our tempo onto our opponents and dominate from the first serve to the last. Meet our players and join us for a volleyball party afterwards at Axxes Café and Restaurant in Luchtbal, not far from our sports hall!

  • Antwerp’s first international volleyball club

    Antwerp’s first international volleyball club

    September 12, 2025 | Club news | ~2min read time

Antwerp is home and hub to many international professionals and students. No Blockers is the first international volleyball club in Antwerp, founded to bring people from all cultures together on and off the court through the passion for the sport. In just 4 months, we developed the club and materialised the dream that began in 2022.

    Humble beginnings

Three years ago, a small group of friends organised regular games together but when competing in their first tournament in Delft, they had to come up with a team name. None of the no-blockers at the time was particularly tall, so they decided to call themselves ‘No Blockers’. And just like so, the name was born on April 11, 2022. The group continued playing at tournaments and some of the players also were involved in organising local international volleyball games in Antwerp. This is also where things took a steep development curve.

In May 2025, two members took the initiative to register No Blockers as an official club with Sporta. Up until then, internationals had loosely organised regular matches via MeetUp and WhatsApp groups, but the family element was missing; with increasing numbers of international players, people were looking for belonging.

    The 4-month miracle

It’s incredibly hard to grasp – even for us – but it took only 4 months to materialise the dream that the founding partners set into the world in 2022. From designing our logo, getting our teamwear and setting up our website and socials as well as organising trainings and securing a permanent field for our home matches. We will elaborate more about this process in future blogs.

    Focus on internationals

No Blockers took a steep development curve to become the first international volleyball club in Antwerp. Yet, at its heart, No Blockers has remained loyal to its premise: to offer safe, fun and inclusive volleyball activities specifically for the international community of Antwerp. With players from more than 15 countries we celebrate diversity and bring out the best in everyone.

If you have moved to Antwerp from abroad to study or to work, No Blockers offers you the opportunity to exercise while effortlessly making new friends.

  • Presenting our jersey design

    Presenting our jersey design

    September 9, 2025 | Club news | ~1min read time

Our uniform is the centrepiece of our visual identity. Our colours and our logo are recognisable and feared among our opponents. But how did it come about and what meaning do they convey?

    Explaining our design

When cold and warm collide, nature unleashes power. The two colour extremes on one shirt represent our different backgrounds coming together and working together in one club, releasing the true potential of people’s diversity. This is the thought behind our red and blue colours.

Our logo reflects our name: the stripe stands for the ‘trespassing forbidden’ sign, meaning our opponents have no way through at the net. The ball stands for the passion that we all share and it is round, meaning that every club member is equal and has equal opportunities to shine.

What was also important to us was that our outfitter commits to sustainable materials and ways of production. With Erima, we partnered up with a manufacturer that is eager to use energy efficiently in their production sites, transforms plastic bottles into sportswear and commits to FairTrade production practices.

In short, we are incredibly proud to show up united as one team in our very own teamwear. As of next season, we will be open to sponsors. We also aim to launch an online merch store soon, so stay tuned and visit our website regularly for updates and follow us on Instagram and TikTok.
